Today, I'm going to show you how to take a regular 3D image of a brain and make it look like an MRI of a brain with Alzheimer's.
00:11.8
00:15.0
I'm going to open my image 'brain' up here and we can get started!
00:15.1
00:21.5
First, we're going to create several copies of the image. We need to make four different copies.
00:21.6
00:27.9
This way, there's a total of 5 layers. They should be labeled, from bottom to top: Bottom, Green, Purple, Orange, and Blue.
00:28.0
00:30.5
So while I continue to label these, I'll go ahead and tell you the use of this.
00:30.6
00:36.0
The goal here is to better educate people about the affects of Alzheimer's on the brain, and where precisely it affects the most.
00:36.1
00:40.9
So Green means that the brain is healthy, Blue is slow deterioration,
00:41.0
00:45.8
Purple is more rapid deterioration, Orange is critical, and Red is failing.
00:45.9
00:54.5
I forgot to add in the Red at first, but I do so later... if you want, you can duplicate the background layer to have another layer titled Red.
00:54.6
01:01.0
So now we're going to begin the actual editing. Go to Image and then Adjustments, and we're going to focus on Hue and Saturation.
01:01.1
01:05.9
Remember to hide the rest of your layers while you do this, so you only see the layer you're working on.
01:06.0
01:11.0
Now, go back to Hue and Saturation. For a very vibrant green color, you're going to want to stay on the master section.
01:11.1
01:13.9
Start by moving the Hue slider to about +100, give or take 5.
01:14.0
01:20.1
Move the Saturation slider all the way to +100, and move the Lightness slider to -13
01:20.2
01:25.0
Click "Okay"
01:25.1
01:29.9
Hide the Green Layer, and move to the Purple Layer.
01:30.0
01:33.5
Make sure to click on the actual image, like I didn't...
01:33.6
01:38.4
Again, we're going to the Hue and Saturation tab under Image Adjustments. For this, click on the Master drop down, and choose Reds from the list.
01:38.5
01:43.3
Change the Red Hues slider to about -93, the Saturation slide between +40 and +50, and the Lightness to -3.
01:43.4
01:48.2
As you can see, our project is coming along quite nicely already.
01:48.3
01:51.2
After this, we're going to move on to the Orange Layer.
01:51.3
01:56.1
Again, we're going to the Hue and Saturation tab under Image Adjustments
01:56.2
02:01.0
Now for this layer I want a really bright orange, so I'm going to stay on the master list to begin with.
02:01.1
02:12.0
I played around with it a little until there was a color I liked. I put hue at +33, saturation at +66, and left lightness at 0
02:12.1
02:16.9
Now I'm going to the Reds tab to help me get that real orangey color I want.
02:17.0
02:21.8
I set hue at -24 and left everything else alone.
02:21.9
02:29.0
Lastly in color adjustments (for now), I'm gonna work on the Blue layer. Make sure you're only focusing on that layer, hiding the others.
02:29.1
02:33.9
Back to Images, Adjustments, and Hue and Saturation.
02:34.0
02:39.8
I'm going to stay on the Master tab for now, to help me get that Blue color that I need. I set hue to -180
02:39.9
02:45.3
Now I'm going to go to the Blues dropdown, and set the Hue on that to about +39 even though it doesn't do much.
02:45.4
02:52.6
I'm gonna switch to the Reds dropdown here, setting the hue to -16 so that it's a very nice, bright blue.
02:52.7
02:58.5
So after this, I'm going to go through and make sure all of my layers are no longer hidden.
02:58.6
03:07.0
Now, we're going to go up to the top, choose the Layer dropdown, down to Layer Mask, and apply the "Hide All" Layer mask to all of the altered layers.
03:07.1
03:24.4
So the Green, Purple, Orange and Blue layers.
03:24.5
03:29.5
Now, the reason we've added the layer mask to the Green layer even though it's technically our base, is because we want to maintain that pristine white background.
03:29.6
03:34.4
Select the Green layer Layer Mask as your current canvas, and then click on your paintbrush tool.
03:34.5
03:40.0
You're going to color the whole brain area in so that the Green shows through. Make sure to paint on the actual layer mask, not the layer itself.
03:40.1
03:43.4
Be mindful of the edges, we don't want them to be greyish.
03:45.0
03:49.8
Color, color, color! Leave no holes and stay in the lines!
03:49.9
03:59.0
Suggestion: don't try to color it all in one click, you'll mess up and have to start all over again
03:59.1
04:14.9
Color, color, color! Continue coloring! You could use a bigger brush, but I prefer not to I find that
04:15.0
04:32.0
Sometimes they get sloppy.
04:32.1
04:36.9
Now that that's done, we're going to begin to work on the purple layer.
04:37.0
04:41.8
Make sure to select the Purple layer's Layer Mask, not the layer itself.
04:41.9
04:46.7
I'm making this brush a little bit smaller (about 10px), because we're going to just work on the very edges of the brain here.
04:46.8
04:51.6
Personally, I prefer to zoom in (if I could find the tool!), so that I can be more precise.
04:51.7
04:56.5
Gotta move it so it's in the spot I want.
04:56.6
05:01.4
Now, select your paintbrush tool and begin to outline the edges of the brain!
05:01.5
05:16.0
Well, as you can see, I forgot to do what I told you do to, which was not paint on the layer itself...
05:16.1
05:20.9
Gotta try to fix this...
05:21.0
05:35.0
Hide other layers...disable layer mask... make sure I didn't actually move the image... erase paint.
05:35.1
05:43.5
Didn't actually paint on the brain, so not even gonna bother erasing the paint, instead I'm just gonna move the brain to where it should be.
05:43.6
05:45.5
Try number two!
05:45.6
05:47.6
Paintbrush and layer mask!
05:47.7
05:52.5
So, we're only gonna outline the very edges of the brain, going about half an inch in (on my screen at least)
05:52.6
05:57.4
On this, we don't have to be so careful about the edges, because we didn't darken the purple layer.
05:57.5
06:06.0
Color the brainstem purple too (that's the weird shape at the bottom right of the brain).
06:06.1
06:14.0
I figure this part is pretty self explanitory and I don't need to keep captioning this, so do your outlining and I'll be back shortly!
06:43.0
06:47.0
Okay, now that we've finished that, we're going to select the Blue Layer Mask to work on.
06:47.1
06:50.9
Here I'm going to move the blue layer down below the Orange layer because it makes more sense to me.
06:51.0
06:55.8
Again, this brush is going to be smaller than the last one we used. I set it at 15
06:55.9
07:00.7
You want to trace around the brain like you did with the purple, but trace inside of the purple.
07:00.8
07:05.6
It's okay if the blue overlaps the purple, we can fix that later by moving the blue layer so that it's below the purple.
07:05.7
07:10.5
I went ahead and did that, but you can do it at any time you please.
07:10.6
07:18.0
I'm not going to walk you through how to outline something; just make sure you do a complete outline of the brain inside the purple.
07:48.9
08:09.7
So here's where I add in the Red layer that I'd forgotten about earlier. I duplicate the background image, and then go to Image, Adjustments, Hue and Saturation. I set it under the Orange layer.
08:09.8
08:14.6
Stay on the Master option in Hue and Saturation, and go directly to the Saturation slider. I set the saturation to +99
08:14.7
08:22.0
Now go to the Reds option on the drop down menu, and set the hue to about -23 to get a very vibrant, deep red.
08:22.1
08:26.9
Now, go to the Layer tab, and add a Hide All layer mask to the Red layer we just created.
08:27.0
08:33.0
With the red, you want to focus on the center and front of the brain, which is where most deterioration happens.
08:33.1
08:37.9
That being said, each person with Alzheimer's is different, so there's no need to be super specific about placing.
08:38.0
08:45.0
I would suggest including at least one patch of red in each third of the brain, depending on how severely you want the brain to be afflicted.
08:45.1
08:53.0
As you can see, I'm trying to be very precise and stay within a specific ridge of the brain. This makes it look more realistic.
08:53.1
09:01.6
If you're like me, and precision isn't always your strong suit, feel free to zoom in and shrink your brush even more.
09:01.7
09:31.4
Or, you can use your eraser on places that you feel as though you went out of the lines.
09:31.5
09:36.3
I utilize both here, zooming in and erasing.
09:36.4
09:39.0
In the next part of this tutorial, we'll finish this brain up!
