I am hoping that its gonna be a nice video together with my guest. First of all, could you please introduce yourself to us. Of course

My name is Gülsah. I am living in Munich-Germany for the last 1.5 years. I am working as a Data Scientist here.

I first came to Munich for an internship.After that I found a full time job and stay here

I am working as a full time employee since September. Alright, very good. Can you please tell us a little bit about your job

We dont know anything.We are strangers to this business. What do you do ?

I am working as a Data Scientist. Data science is a profession which has an increasing popularity over the last few years.

Data science was actually an ever-present profession.

But with the developments in computer science and the discovery of new algorithms,it has become a science that is used in almost every sector today.

What is Data Science ? Data science is a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science.

So what do we do with data science? Using the historical data we have, we make predictions about the future by passing these data through certain algorithms.

For example, now as we all are in quarantine, most of us using netflix more often.Based on the previous movies or series that you watched on netflix, you are receiving new suggestions by the help of data science

It's called the recommender engine. There is artificial intelligence behind it

Or, for example data science is also being used to forecast the weather. By looking at the data for the weather conditions in the past , data science can make predictions for the upcoming days

Now, when you say data science not everyone knows what you are talking about. But when you say artificial intelligence, everyone is like, ah, really????

we can directly start with netflix. for example, Black Mirror..It's probably the best tv series on predicting the future

Well, I have another question. Is it also related to Data Science when you search for the price of the latest Mercedes cars on Google and suddenly next day, when you are surfing on the facebook an ad about Mercedes popping up

All your data is stored in cookies. What did you like, what did you look for, what were you interested in .. All of these are recorded.

By looking at your historical data, for the next times, they are showing you ads related to those. While you are looking for something on Amazon or Ebay for example , you see some other models for the related products on the other sites

Its scary! Extremely scary.It is as terrifying as it's exciting actually.So,it's scary that everything has been controlled

I don't know, so you are in the industry, maybe you can interpret them in a normal way. But isn't it frightening, on the other hand, for the future?

Sometimes it scares me. However, what can be done is limited. Because it's not and -it can be- completely out of human control

No matter how much this system evolves, it is essential to have a human control. So as long as we are on the good side, anything to do with data, will also benefit humanity.

I want to see everything from the bright side. But as you said, of course, there is a possibility that these can be used for the bad intention like everything else

Alright, I see. As far as I know, its not being so long since you are here in Germany. Yes.

How long has it been? It's been 1.5 years without any interruption. Before that I lived here for 6 months for an internship. We can say that in total its 2 years.

So it was the first time right? You hadnt been here before that ? Actually my adventure of living abroad started with France not with Germany

I moved to France in 2017 for my master education. It was in Machine Learning and Data Mining and also in Computer Science. It was a dual master degree program. Excellent

My program had an advantage like this: We had to go to the uni for the first semester, and for the second semerster, we had to make an internship at least for 3 months.

Then for the third semester you are going back to school. For the 4th semester you have to both make an internship and write your master thesis.

I chose Germany for my first internship. I came to Munich as a first time. I wanted to come to Germany because especially in my sector,technologically Germany is really a developed country.

There is a huge investment in this sector.We know that they need people in these areas. Yes, exactly! Also, you dont struggle too much in terms of language here.

Because most of the Germans, especially in big cities like Munich, can speak English. Especially in software development, you dont need to know German. I came here with zero German knowledge :)

My German is still not perfect. But English?English is certainly enough especially if you are working in software industry.

When I first came here for an internship, I stayed here around 6 months. I liked it very much so that when I went back to France, I immediately started to search for another internship in Germany for my master thesis.

Luckily, I found one. I came here again in last year February to write my master thesis.While writing my thesis, I was also applying for full time positions.

I used Linkedin very actively. Also there is another website to search for jobs, its called Stepstone. I used that one also very actively.Actually, these kind of questions are being asked to me very often

Especially like " I cant speak German, can I find a job?" or "Which websites did you use to search for job"? "How are the interviews in Germany" etc. Yea they are being asked to us as well.

"Should I come to Germany only for an interview? Cant it be via Skype ? ". Its possible. They all are possible actually. There is one answer to all the questions that you just asked. Its yes! Of course.

There are many examples. You are one of these examples for us. So, how long did it take for you to land in a job?

How many applications did you make ? How long did it take for you overall from applications to to land in a job

Actually, I think I was a bit lucky or I dont know maybe its because of my profession. I was called for the interview from the 80% of the applications that I made

I havent been accepted by all of them but most of them at least invited me for an interview. During the some of these interviews, I was already here in Munich so I went to their office.

But for some of them , I was already back to Turkey. So we made an interview via Skype. There was no problem. All of them were in English

How long did it take? It took me around 2 months to find the job I wanted.It was mostly because of me. As it would be my first full time job,I wanted to land in one which satisfy all my expectations.I wanted to make a good start

Thats why it took around 2 months. But Im very happy right now. I think 2 months are not a long time to find a job. Its a good period of time actually. Yes, but its also a very stressfull period of time

I have the same excitement before every interview. You are starting over. You are sending the required documents over and over.Examine everything, check everything out again

I memorized everything that I wanted to say in the interview.While I was washing my hands, I was introducing myself to me. I was looking at the mirror and was saying "Hello, My name is Gülsah, I studied this and that etc "

In the morning, while you are having breakfast at your parents place, you are speaking with them in English. So, what is the average wage for someone working in your field?

It differs according to your education level. If you have a masters degree it will be different than bachelors degrees. And if you have a PhD degree it will be also different.

For someone who just finished masters degree, and having his/her first full time job, we can say that its monthly around 5K euros gross

Its gross right? Yes its gross. The tax you are paying in Germany, also differs from person to person.Its different if you are married or single. Its different if you have one child or more etc

For me, almost 40% of my salary goes to taxes. I have already mentioned this in my previous videos that for a single person 40% is directly goes to taxes. For me its huge amount.

Its almost the half of it.So here, basically Germany says that if you are married come here brother, this country is exactly for you. If you have a children , you must definitely come,Im hugging you. Take all your children and come here

Im gonna even give you child benefit. But if you are single, then I am gonna take 40% of your salary.Yes, or it means you can go to your own country and work there.Yes, or, it means dont come here.

Well, you have also seen France. And now you have been experiencing Germany for the last 1.5 years. Can you please compare these two countries in terms of quality of life.Were you happy in France? How was your life there ?

Well,both countries have both advantages and disadvantages. I actually couldnt like France that much. I am sure there will be some people who are seeing this video right now and either living in France or love France very much. They might be a bit mad at me. But everyone has their own experiences

I think France is more economic to live in comparison to Germany. There is a government support for your rent no matter if you are a student or you are working. If you apply for it, no matter how much you earn, you can get some amount of support from the government.

Arent they questioning anything ? For example, in Germany they are questioning. There is a limit for the salary. As far as I know,if its above the limit, you cant get any support. Are they really giving this support without any conditions ?

Well, I dont want to give misinformation. Maybe there is a limit for the salary. I have friends who are working as engineer in France and I am sure that they dont have a small income. They are working as a full time right?

Yes, they are working as a fulltime. Even they are receiving support from the government. But of course, maybe the amount differs from person to person. Maybe if they are giving lets say 100 euros to a students, they might give 50 euros to them. But there is definitely a support.

Apart from that, I find the supermarkets in France more economic. Well, it differs in which city you are living of course. I was living near Lyon. Isnt Lyon a rich city? I might be wrong ,just asking.

Its a touristic city. Its a beautiful city. Depending on where you are going, you might see prices above the average. But, if you compare it for example with Munich,both of them are very touristic cities but Lyon is definitely much more economic than Munich.

I find Germany a little bit more expensive. Maybe its like that when we compare directly with Munich. Probably, we cant tell the same for Cologne, or maybe for smaller cities but Munich is really above the average in Germany

Exactly.For the people who live in Turkey, I find Munich very similar to Izmir.If there would be a see here, its exactly like Izmir. We are also thinking the same. In terms of the quality of life or the expensiveness, we can think its like Izmir, actuall.

If we only compare the quality of life regardless of the expensiveness, which one is easier to live? I think, at least for Turkish people, its easier to live in Germany.Why? I know the reasons, but still why? Maybe you can tell some new things that I dont know

I was lucky. During the time I was living in France, I had many Turkish friends. I also met some Turkish families which became family to me. These possibilities are much higher in Germany.In Germany, you can see a lot of people even not able to speak in English and they are able to survive only with Turkish.

Because there are too many Turkish people here. If you move your hand while walking down the street, you can hit a Turkish person. There are Turkish people here who own a company.

For example, I can give you an absurd example.Lets say in your area, its possible to land a job while speaking only Turkish.Yes.I dont know if its difficult but i think its possible. Maybe it can be a bit difficult but we can find examples

I know from my experiences. During the time I was searching for a job , I saw a lof of Turkish companies. The CEO of the company is Turkish. Its very possible.Yes, sure. For example my boss from the company that I did my first internship was also Turkish

In the same department,besides me and my boss, there was also 2 more Turkish colleagues.So, its very possible.For example, in Germany you cant feel like far from home.

If you dont want to hang out with Turks and want do interact with different cultures, you can always be together with internationals. There are too many options in here.Yes, I am not only talking about Germans. Munich is a very international city. Here , you have the opportunity to meet people from very different cultures and countries.

Apart from that, if you like to eat lahmacun or cigköfte, you can go to the Turkish families :) I like Germany, really. You can be free with your religion. Okay, maybe you cant hear azan in Munich but in some cities even azan is allowed.

There are too many mosques here in Munich. If there are people who are coming from Islamic culture and would like to continue living in same conditions, its very good in here. You dont have to be afraid of feeling the lack of it. You can find the same environment here as you have in Turkey

It only depends on what you want. As far I as observe, Germany doesnt set boundaries on such situations. I am receiving that kind of questions like "Could I have problems regarding to my religion, or could I have problems for performing prayer". To be honest, I dont think that it would cause prolems

Especially in Munich, I dont think that would be a problem.Because I think Munich is a city which cares about freedom.Gülsah,I would like to as you what are your future plans ? You already mentioned that you like living in Germany.Are you planning to continue living here in the future ?

Or dou you also think like, I will work here for 3-5 years and then will be back to my country. I think, for the most of the people when they first move here its the initial plan. They are planning to stay here for couple of years, save money and then going back to the Turkey.

At the very beginning, I was also planning to do the same. Just, the time limit in my head was not 3-5 years but like 10 years. But, now I am not sure. Because by time you are getting used to live here. I am not sure if I can keep up with working conditions in Turkey after spending years here

Right now, I am very happy with my life here. I am not planning to go back to Turkey.Maybe in the future, when I get retired I can go back to Turkey. Because being retired here in Germany is really difficult. You can see old retired people outside collecting empty bottles.

Because, as far as I know, not a a lot of company is giving you the retirement bonus as in Turkey.Retirees are earning a really small income. As they are not receiving the retirement bonus, they are a bit struggling.

We know some German people who get retired in Germany and moved to Antalya/Turkey. There are too many people doing this. Some of them are moving to Thailand. In the recent years, Bulgaria has become very popular for those people.Especially the ones who cant move to countries which is far away like Thailand, they re moving to Bulgaria

I think its very logical. It can happen that they cant have a good life here with that income, but with the same amount of money, they can in a really good conditions in countries like Turkey and Bulgaria.So, why not?

I am also planning to go back to Turkey when I get retired. Lets see, we still have plenty of time. Perfect, Gülsah thank you very much for coming today. If there is anything that I skipped, or if there is anything that you would like to add , please feel free to continue.

Actually, I would like to say something. I am receiving this question very often. Maybe we can reach more people through this video. We might answer the questions at once.

I have a an advice for those who are planning to study abroad. Its not the most important criteria for a university being abroad. The quality of the university you are appling for, the curriculum,the alternatives that the university will give you after the graduation are really important.

If I sepak for myself, I was lucky. Why? I can totally understand that for some people it might be not possible to afford a 2 years master program only with the support of family.

In this respect, the master programs in Germany are really great. Because you can work as a working student while you study. I didnt have this opportunity in France. I didnt ask for it because i thought its also the same in France. No, its not.

Reall? Yes, unfortunately. Its then different. Yes its one of the disadvantages for example. In France, even though you are able to speak French,its too difficult to find a job as working student. English is less common in France, right? Its better in Germany. I think you also agree.

Its one of the resons why I didnt want to stay in France. Its not enough to be able to undertand and speak French. It should be perfect if you want to find a good job. Even finding an internship is too difficult..Thats why I chose Germany for my first internship. Then I realized that things are different and better in here and came here later

But , please keep it in mind that its difficults to survive in France without speaking French.And as a student, working is out of question. In Germany ,it really ease the life of the students. We know it from Bahar as well as you know.You can really survive here while working as part time.

If I work as a part time, my partner as a full time ,we can get along well. Or if a student come here alone and work as a part time, he can maintain his life. I have already made couple of videos with other friends. You can find them on the top among the cards.

I honestly thought it might be the same in France but apparently not. I heard it as a first time today.In social fields you dont have much opportunities because of the language barries. Its the same in many country.

People might think that they dont need to speak the local language as they are working as a software developer. They might think that Enlish would be enough for them. In Germany, yes you can , but in France nope!

Or you have to put much more effort in it.One more thing that I would like to add,I can give the example from my university. As I said it before,we had to do an internship during the 2nd and 4th semesters. When I came to Germany for an internship, I was earning as much as a minimum wage.

As a student, if you are living in a shared apartment, you can even save money during the internship. So, you are saying that even if you are not working as a full time employee,its possible to save money.

Yes, of course.Only as an intern.Then , after that when I went back to France for my 3rd semestr, I didnt ask for support from my family anymore. Because I was able to save some money during the internship.

Then I came back to Germany for the 4th semestr again. So, in total not for the whole 2 years period but only for the 1st semestr, I needed support from my family. So just keep it in mind. If you have a financial support for your education, you can choose that kind of of programs.

It makes sense. Is there anything that we are missing about the master programs? Or especially about France if you have received other questions, you can also share them with us.

Because for example, I didnt even asked the previous situation for France as I though it would be the same in France. I just learned it now.Just as I describe before, you get a financial support from the government for your rent.

And also, for example in my universiy there was one supermarket only dedicated to foreign students or for the students who has a really low income. You are going there to register your name and I think it was 20 euros for a month..

Are you receiving a cheque or something? Yes, you can buy a lot of stuff with 20 euros.Or, you dont use the cheque but instead registering your name and if you have been accepted, you can make all your shopping from that store.

But for example, you would have pay 100 euros for the same stuff in a regular market, while you pay 20-30 euros in that store. You can also search for those kind of stuff around you.

Really, if you dont make your own research and effort, nobody will come to you and say "oww,take this money.. Poor you, you are coming from Turkey, you might struggle here"

You really need to put an effort into something and search for everything. This is one of the biggest things that living abroad has taught us.

It doesn't work without effort. You have to constantly strive. Its not like in Turkey. Okay so I'm living if there is something coming from somewhere it's good, if it doesn't , then its still fine.

You have to strive. But when you strive hard, you can really reach your goals. There is one more think I would like to say. A lot of people are asking me about the comparison of Germany and Turkey.

Where would you like to live? Lets dont think about money first, lets say that you have a lot of money, where would you like to live? in Turkey or in Germany? I am sorry to interrupt but its always beeing asked.

Brother, forget about all. Lets say that you are earning monthly 25-30k Turkish liras, would you like to stay in Turkey? I think you will also talk about a similar scenario.

If I only experienced everything I wanted , lived abroad for a certain time, if i travelled everywhere I wanted,if I am already bored of living abroad and also received a nice salary offer from somewhere in Turkey, I would move back

Because, in my opinion , -if you have money- the quality of life in Turkey is better than in Germany.I hear if a lot from the Turkish people who were born in here.They all are saying that their relatives in Turkey think that they are living in a really good conditions here.

We all are super rich. We have everything etc. When they go to Turkey for vacations, the others envy them.But actually not everything is like how they seem to be. Of course there is also bright side of being here.

Because you have the opportunity to interact with other cultures. But still, its not the same quality. I think that in Turkey, people are more into to enjoy the life and to spend more time together. What you said is true but the social activities are different.

Here, they have different social activites.It is also related to culture as well.In Turkey, the close family relationships are more important.They are here a little more distant.Maybe it can also be related to that.
