Day 5: COMMANDMENT V “Honor thy father and thy mother.” September 23, 2020 A. WORSHIP B. WORD: Exodus 20:12a “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.” Malachi 4:5-6 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. Mal 4:6 And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.” PRAY and REFLECT: The fifth mitzvah (commandment) marks a transition from the first four (which have to do with our vertical relationship with the Lord) to the following five (which have to do with our horizontal relationship with others). In this pivotal commandment, the word translated “honor” (kahbed) derives from a root word meaning “weighty,” in terms of impressiveness or importance. The same word is also used to refer to our heartfelt attitude toward God. The Lord intended that the mishpakah (family) would picture His relationship with us. Just as God created both man and woman in His image (Gen. 1:27), so children are to regard their parents as divinely ordained and truly significant. The first four mitzvot tell us about God; and it is only through obedience to these commandments that we are able to really understand our own identity — as well as the identity of others in our family, our community, and our world. Evaluate your relationship or attitude towards your parents and others who are in authority over you (church, work, school). Is there anything that we need to confess to God regarding our attitude? Have you honored your parents? Any seed of rebellion that needs to be rooted out? Any display of ungratefulness for the things they have done for you (We usually think of what they have not done for us). Today, show your parents, stepparents, or guardians how much they mean to you. God promises a blessing to us if we honor our father and mother. As we read in Proverbs 3:1-4: “My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands; For the length of days and long life And peace, they will add to you. Let not mercy and truth forsake you; Bind them around your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart, And so find favor and high esteem In the sight of God and man. ” Checklist: Check ways by which you have violated God’s command. [ ] Disobeyed parents by being stubborn and rebellious (Deut 21:18-21). Specify acts of rebellion: _____________________________________ [ ] Cursed parents (Exo 21:17) (e.g. talking back disrespectfully, silently cursing them, not speaking well of them to others) [ ] Physically attacked and harmed them (Exo 21:15) [ ] Stolen money or something from them ( Prov 19:26; 28:24) [ ] Neglected them, did not show love, care and appreciation to them at their old age (Prov 23;22) D. PRAISE and DECLARE: Isaiah 64:8 But now, O Lord, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand. Psalm 68:4-5 Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the Lord; exult before him! Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. TODAY ON THIS NEW YEAR 5781 WE CROWN YOU LORD JESUS AS KING OF THE TANZANIA FOR GOD THE FATHER HAS GIVEN YOU ALL AUTHORITY AND DOMINION THAT ALL PEOPLE GROUPS AND DIALECTS IN OUR NATION SHOULD SERVE YOU AND GIVE YOU GLORY AND HONOR. WE PROCLAIM THAT THE TANZANIA IS FOR CHRIST! E. PARTAKE and CELEBRATE the Communion
