Title:
Description:
Imagine poverty so rife that one of the methods of survival is surrogacy. Yes, in India, young women who are against the odds of survival due to poverty are doing what sociologist and performer Amrita Pande has referred to as Wombs In Labour and Womb Work among other working titles that she has used to highlight commercial surrogacy in India. In her latest project titled Made In India - the UCT based educator and performer under the directorship of Ditte Maria Bjerg used the backdrop of a baby farm owned by one Dr Patel in Anand, India to tell the story of two surrogate mothers, a client and farm owner. From the ordering' of a child, to the fertilization, pregnancy and the birth usually via caesarean - Pande breaks it down and also engages with the audience in a question and answer section of the production.
