At The National Archives we do a range of research which is underpinned by our role as Keeper of the national record and archives sector lead.
00:17.8
00:26.6
And we have a range of research-active staff whose different specialisms range from history to conservation science to data and computing.
00:26.7
00:34.2
And all of our research is underpinned by an interest in interpreting, preserving and providing access to archives.
00:39.8
00:47.6
We have developed conceptual themes which act as our research priorities and these range from openness, access and use
00:47.7
00:57.4
To risk, uncertainty and trust to citizen, law and state. And they're a way of capturing the range of different challenges that we have
00:57.5
01:02.6
Both as an organisation that keeps archives ourselves and as archives sector lead.
01:02.7
01:09.8
Under those headings we've developed statements of intent that draw out the key research questions that we want to tackle.
01:09.9
01:16.9
The statements of intent and the research themes are designed to act as an internal compass for us.
01:17.0
01:24.4
So that we know internally and we can articulate to all of our staff what our research should be orientated around.
01:24.5
01:29.3
But importantly, they're also an indicator to academics that we want to partner with
01:29.4
01:36.6
Some of whom will come from disciplines that we haven't engaged with much in the past, so we're looking to collaborate with
01:36.7
01:45.0
Mathematicians, people from computing, data scientists who can help us unpick some of our core digital archiving challenges.
01:50.0
01:57.1
The National Archives has been really keen to develop the infrastructure that we need to support our research activities going forward.
01:57.2
02:03.0
One initiative has been to create a new Research Hub which is an internal space within our building.
02:03.1
02:12.9
That space is open to all research-active staff across the organisation who can come to use it to collaborate together on interdisciplinary research projects.
02:13.0
02:19.0
We also see it as a home for our long-term academic collaborators who are working with us on our research projects.
02:19.1
02:22.6
And we also want it to be open to our doctoral students.
02:22.7
02:27.8
The idea behind the Research Hub is to create a research community at The National Archives
02:27.9
02:35.0
And its a way of developing our reputation as an excellent host for high quality interdisciplinary research.
02:40.2
02:43.6
We run a number of academic programmes at The National Archives.
02:43.7
02:52.9
We do quite a few things for doctoral students, we have doctoral students in-house through Collaborative Doctoral Partnerships and Collaborative Doctoral Awards.
02:53.0
03:00.1
We also work with a number of Doctoral Training Partnership schemes, for example we run a very successful PAST training skills workshop.
03:00.2
03:07.3
Which is about teaching academics essential archival skills.
03:07.4
03:15.5
We also run a number of events for academics including our Big Ideas seminar series, digital experimentation workshops and an annual academic lecture series.
03:15.6
03:28.4
These are really important in creating a platform at The National Archives for getting people together to showcase research that happens both around our collections and around our core recordkeeping challenges.
03:34.4
03:38.6
The National Archives is really well-known for its historically-focussed research that it does around our collections.
03:38.7
03:43.5
And that's one of our core strengths and we want to continue to champion that type of research.
03:43.6
03:52.1
But we also want to engage much more strongly in research around our recordkeeping challenges, particularly coming out of our Digital Strategy
03:52.2
04:01.7
So that we can work to create the disruptive archive, so that we can be leaders in the field, so that we can take the archives sector on a journey
04:01.8
04:09.2
And give them the tools and technologies that they need to embrace the brave new world of digital records.
