Most animals along an evolutionary sequence are usually common ancestors of each other and sometimes families of animals go off and do their own thing entirely. This was very well demonstrated among the remingtonocetids that are usually seen a s a transition from land animal to whale but are actually a very distinct group of animals that evolved in their own direction.
