Loosely based on the 1906 novella by Mikhail Kuzmin, WINGS is the story of Vanya, a fourth-year student at the St. Petersburg Imperial University. Unlike his privileged aristocratic classmates Vanya comes from nothing and is desperate to win a fellowship that would allow him to stay safely within the walls of the university following his graduation – which he needs to do. Outside the school lies a cold, classist, discriminatory society, one in which men suspected of certain “morality crimes” quietly disappear without any explanation. When Vanya seeks help on his application from the dashing graduate student Larion Stroop, their relationship turns into something that threatens the carefully constructed safety of Vanya’s world.

The title song “Wings” takes place in the last third of the movie. Vanya and Stroop are no longer speaking. Stroop has confessed his feelings for Vanya, causing Vanya to reject him, end their relationship, and retreat further into his own mind. Ida, an outcast herself due to struggles with her mental health, seeks out advice from Stroop. She is also aware that Vanya is hiding behind the tree, listening, and hopes that Stroop’s words of encouragement can reach Vanya as well.
