Description:
Dental plaque is a well-structured film that forms over a period of 24 hours. It consists of numerous bacterial colonies. The formation of plaque takes place in five steps; once these are completed, this coating hardens while accumulating bacteria, making it more and more harmful to the surrounding tissues to which it adheres easily. Once it has matured, it has the ability to damage the enamel. Ingesting sugar modifies the pH of saliva, making it acid. This acidity enhances the decalcification of the enamel. Past a certain stage, this decalcification transforms into tooth decay. If the plaque is in a basic rather than an acid environment, minerals in the saliva such as phosphorus and calcium adhere to it and form a coating of tartar. Tartar carries bacteria, which makes it very irritating to the gum. A coating of tartar which is not removed by a good scaling increases the risk of periodontitis. This disease is characterized by the destruction of the bone structure surrounding the tooth, thus compromising its stability. For these reasons, it’s important to dislodge the plaque every day with a toothbrush and dental floss. It is also important to see your dentist or hygienist regularly for a good scaling so as to keep your super smile.
