DISCLAIMER: There is a significant amount of swearing throughout this video. I do not believe in participating in the perpetuation of respectability politics. That is not the reason of why I cuss, but it is one reason of why I am not as shameful of doing so as I once was. I come from environments in which my family and friends who are of color and most from low-income neighborhoods speak African American Vernacular English (AAVE), which often consists of a lot of cussing. It took me a long time after unlearning internalized anti-Blackness and classism to realize that cussing says absolutely nothing about the morality, intelligence, nor value of other human beings. After conquering this shame I once had and having queer mentors of color who've had similar experiences and histories, cussing gradually became a part of my unapologetic expression. What can be defined as obscene language is absolutely culturally variant, and I wanted to also note that I do try to abstain from cussing that involves slander and defamation (as in Islam backbiting and slandering others is prohibited), and that majority of the cussing I do participate in is casual and consists of AAVE words. I found it important to clarify to make people aware of my decision to refrain from policing my own Blackness while also holding on to the Islamic beliefs that I hold. It was also to remind folks that the amount I cuss may bother you depending on your own experiences and cultural knowledge, but I am still just as deserving of being heard as anyone else. My words have no less value than anyone else, despite you and I's possible differences in expressing ourselves in the public eye. Lastly, I'd like to give a huge thank you to every amazing queer and trans person of color who helped organize Portland State University's Queer Students of Color Conference this year and for inviting me to come speak as one of the keynote speakers. Please enjoy the video. Assalamu alaikum (may peace be upon you) and have a Black day.
