Description:
ARC seminar: 09 April 2021 by Prof David Buckley from South African Astronomical Observatory. Abstract: In this presentation, I will discuss results from the SALT transient programme which has undertaken optical follow-up observations of a wide variety of transient and variable objects. I will focus mostly on observations of X-ray and gamma-ray transients, including out-bursting X-ray binaries, flaring blazars and a long GRB. Some of these investigations have also been supported by the local MASTER-SAAO transient detection system. Many of these observations have been coordinated with other multi-wavelength ground-based and space-based telescopes, including new facilities like the MeerKAT radio telescope and the eROSITA and PART-XC X-ray instruments onboard the Spekcrum Röntgen-Gamma (SRG) satellite. This has led to the recent discovery of quasi-periodic X-ray eruptions from two non-active galaxies, thought to be a result of black hole interactions. Finally, I will end with a discussion on the future directions in transient studies in South Africa, particularly with the Rubin Observatory LSST and plans for a BRICS-wide transient detection and follow-up network.
