00:02.1
What is good, MexitPlanners?
00:02.2
00:05.3
Everybody moves to Mexico with great expectations.
00:05.4
00:08.8
But today I'm going to tell you about five things that you
00:08.9
00:11.4
should not expect when moving to Mexico.
00:25.4
00:29.6
Item number one of Things not to Expect when Moving to Mexico
00:29.7
00:32.1
is don't expect to find a job.
00:32.2
00:36.0
Rule number one, when moving abroad is you need to have
00:36.1
00:39.2
your finances figured out before you decide to take the leap.
00:39.8
00:43.5
Now, many people, most of the folks that I know are either
00:43.6
00:47.1
entrepreneurs or they teach English as a second language
00:47.2
00:50.4
online. But the rule of thumb is you want to earn in dollars
00:50.6
00:52.0
and spend in pesos.
00:52.1
00:55.4
I would prepare yourself to have a job, to have a stream
00:55.5
00:58.6
of income, to have your finances in order, savings in order,
00:58.7
01:00.6
in order to be able to sustain yourself.
01:00.7
01:03.7
That's really one of the first things to do when you get
01:03.8
01:07.5
your visas to show that you can sustain yourself in Mexico
01:07.6
01:08.3
financially.
01:08.4
01:11.2
Number two, and this may seem very obvious, but
01:11.3
01:14.9
don't expect everybody to speak English or for things to
01:15.0
01:15.6
be in English.
01:15.7
01:19.1
You may find the odd thing here and there in English, but
01:19.2
01:22.6
the predominant language is Spanish, and you should definitely
01:22.7
01:26.0
try to learn the language either before coming or certainly
01:26.1
01:27.1
try while you're there.
01:27.2
01:29.6
It's a Spanish speaking country, so you're going to have
01:29.7
01:33.6
to adapt to everything being in Spanish as well as just the
01:33.7
01:36.3
normal day to day communication is going to be in Spanish.
01:36.4
01:39.2
And so the faster you learn the language, the better you're
01:39.3
01:40.8
going to be living in Mexico.
01:40.9
01:44.5
Item number three on the MexitPlans List of Things Not to
01:44.6
01:48.5
Expect when Moving to Mexico is don't expect anything to
01:48.6
01:50.9
work the way that it did back to the United States.
01:51.0
01:53.8
Now, this is a big generalization, but there are a lot of
01:53.9
01:56.2
things that are going to be similar, but there are so many
01:56.3
01:59.0
more things that are going to be just completely different
01:59.1
02:04.2
from when you rent a place, to having utilities in the landlord's
02:04.3
02:10.1
name, to you know, just all sorts of things, trash pickups, all sorts
02:10.2
02:14.3
of things as it pertains to just getting life done there.
02:14.4
02:18.9
And so you're gonna have to adjust and be flexible to learning
02:19.0
02:19.5
new things.
02:19.6
02:23.0
Just expect everything to be completely different and you'll
02:23.5
02:26.8
But don't expect things to function the way that you're used
02:26.9
02:27.7
to or to run.
02:27.8
02:29.0
There's no mail system.
02:29.1
02:32.1
There's just all sorts of things that are a little different.
02:32.2
02:35.3
The traffic lights actually blink yellow before they go red.
02:35.4
02:37.7
I mean, there's just all sorts of little things that you
02:37.8
02:40.9
have to adjust to, but just don't expect them to be the same
02:41.0
02:41.9
and you'll be okay.
02:42.1
02:45.4
Item number five on the List of Things not to Expect when
02:45.5
02:49.0
Moving to Mexico is don't expect everything to be cheaper.
02:49.3
02:53.4
Now, everything in Mexico is not less expensive than in the United
02:53.5
02:57.4
States. For instance, electronics are more expensive, clothing's
02:57.5
02:58.2
more expensive.
02:58.3
03:00.0
In some cases, food is more expensive.
03:00.3
03:02.1
So don't expect everything to be cheap.
03:02.7
03:05.1
It's less expensive in some cases,
03:05.2
03:08.1
things like housing can be less expensive.
03:08.2
03:09.6
It depends on where you live.
03:09.7
03:11.7
Housing can be more expensive.
03:11.8
03:14.9
So just don't come there with the mindset that everything
03:15.0
03:18.7
should be cheaper or less expensive than in the United States.
03:18.8
03:20.1
That is not always the case.
03:20.2
03:23.7
And in some places, and in some cases, you will find yourself
03:23.8
03:27.1
paying a little bit more for the exact same thing than you
03:27.2
03:28.3
would in the United States.
03:28.4
03:31.0
So don't expect everything to be cheap.
03:32.7
03:35.7
Last but not least on my List of Things not to Expect
03:35.8
03:36.9
When moving to Mexico
03:37.0
03:42.4
is don't expect anybody to be on time when you have an appointment.
03:42.5
03:44.1
So here's the thing, right?
03:44.2
03:49.4
In Latin America, or let me just say, in Mexico, 15 minutes
03:49.5
03:51.6
to 30 minutes late, you're still on time.
03:51.7
03:52.6
That's the norm.
03:52.7
03:54.2
They don't take it as serious.
03:54.3
03:58.7
Punctuality is not a thing in Mexico, and it can rub you
03:58.8
03:59.3
the wrong way.
03:59.4
04:02.3
If you're used to come in from a place where to be early is
04:02.4
04:05.2
to be on time in Mexico, that's just not the case.
04:05.3
04:11.1
Even for business meetings, service calls, mañana can be
04:11.2
04:12.9
anytime after today.
04:13.0
04:15.6
And I've literally had people show up days later when they
04:15.7
04:18.2
say, "Oh, Yeah, I'll be there on Monday, or I'll be there
04:18.3
04:18.6
on Tuesday."
04:18.7
04:20.8
And then three days later, they show up like, "Hey, I'm here
04:21.2
04:23.0
And it's like, Bro, what happened to you?
04:23.1
04:28.2
So don't expect anybody to be on time if you got an appointment
04:28.3
04:31.0
at 9, if they show up before 10, that you're doing well,
04:31.1
04:36.3
and that takes them getting used to, so that is not only in the
04:36.4
04:39.7
professional world when you're contracting for services or
04:39.8
04:42.8
getting things done, but also in social life.
04:42.9
04:46.2
If a party starts at eight o'clock, they'll generally tell
04:46.3
04:49.5
people seven so that you can get things going by eight o'clock.
04:49.6
04:55.2
And so just be prepared that to be on time is not a thing
04:55.4
04:58.0
in Mexico or is not to be punctual
04:58.1
05:01.9
in terms of when things start, they're going to roll in casually
05:02.0
05:04.9
late. They're going to show up the meetings and show up to
05:05.0
05:06.1
appointments casually late.
05:06.2
05:07.2
And that's perfectly fine.
05:07.3
05:09.5
15 to 30 minutes is within the norm.
05:09.6
05:13.8
So just prepare yourself that no one will generally be punctual
05:15.0
05:18.7
