Produced by Made to Measure Films Ltd. The key with this hold is that you can help the baby latch on by using the hand that is supporting the baby's neck and shoulders to bring the baby on to the breast. Once you have the baby in the correct the position you tickle baby's top lip with your nipple and then wait for baby to open his mouth wide, as wide as a yawn, and that is when you bring baby onto the nipple quickly and snuggle baby into your body. Once baby is on all you should feel is a gentle tugging sensation as the baby sucks at the breast, you should not feel any pain. If you feel pain then baby is not latched on deeply enough and you will need to take baby off and try again. Steps for Latching on with Cross Cradle hold 1) Get comfortable sitting upright with a cushion behind your back and a breastfeeding cushion around you - the breastfeeding cushion with help you support baby while you latch. You may need to put a cushion under the breastfeeding cushion. The breastfeeding cushion should be firm and bring baby up to your breasts - you don't want to leaning or bending down to latch baby on. 2) Turn baby's body on his or her side facing you - tummy to mummy. 3) Bring your arm along baby's back and support baby's neck and shoulders with your hand. It is important that you don't put your hand on the back of baby's head as this can be distracting to the baby. With your arm in this position you will have full control of helping baby latch. 4) With your other hand you support your breast in a C hold - keep your fingers well away from the nipple and areola so baby can take a big mouthful when latching on. 5) Now tickle baby's top lip with your nipple, just once or twice should be enough. This will encourage baby to open his mouth wide, like a yawn. It may take a few seconds or minutes even and that is ok, be patient and it is ok if you don't get it right the first few times. 6) Once you see baby open his mouth wide quickly BRING baby on to the nipple and snuggle baby into your body. Again if you don't get it the first time that is ok - just try again. 7) Once baby is latched on and is sucking all you should feel is a gentle tugging sensation. If you feel pain then the latch isn't deep enough and you need to take baby off and start again.
