Hi, my name is Alasdair Taylor
00:02.0
00:06.8
and I am applying for the biomedical science graduate program at Texas A&M.
00:06.9
00:13.0
My interest in a PhD began when, as a part of my bachelor’s degree at the university of Surrey
00:13.1
00:17.9
I had the opportunity to take a year out of my studies to obtain relevant work experience.
00:18.0
00:22.8
I was fortunate enough to be offered a place in the veterinary pathobiology department at Texas A&M
00:22.9
00:27.7
studying Angelman syndrome and genetic imprinting in the Dindot lab
00:27.8
00:32.6
Although I had to fly home early due to the current pandemic
00:32.7
00:34.7
I was able to spend 8 months at A&M
00:34.8
00:37.9
Honestly, it was intimidating at first
00:38.0
00:42.4
I understood the science, but the work was completely new to me
00:42.5
00:45.0
I was 5000 miles from home
00:45.1
00:50.3
I had never been somewhere so big or so unbelievably hot!
00:50.4
00:54.4
Despite this, Texas A&M quickly began to feel like home
00:54.5
00:58.8
Being surrounded by passionate staff, excellent facilities
00:58.9
01:02.5
and developing my own enthusiasm for the work we did there
01:02.6
01:06.7
made me certain that this was the best place for me to pursue a PhD
01:06.8
01:10.8
and somewhere that I could make a real difference
01:10.9
01:14.0
A good portion of my time at work was spent in the lab
01:14.1
01:19.7
I collected mouse samples and used them to extract DNA, RNA and protein
01:19.8
01:23.6
this was daunting at first but with the help of my colleagues
01:23.7
01:25.1
and a lot of practice
01:25.2
01:31.8
I soon began conducting PCR, qRT-PCR and Western blotting independently
01:31.9
01:37.0
I was also involved in projects that included computational data analysis
01:37.1
01:41.7
neuronal imaging and the characterisation of a novel large animal model
01:41.8
01:43.3
of Angelman syndrome
01:43.4
01:46.7
The latter project was at times very physically demanding
01:46.8
01:50.2
but I enjoyed getting my hands dirty with research like this
01:50.3
01:54.0
Almost as much as I enjoyed having a shower afterwards
01:54.1
01:56.7
I even got to design, conduct and analyse
01:56.8
01:59.4
my own behavioural assay of the large animal model
01:59.5
02:02.1
based on previous studies done in mice
02:02.2
02:08.0
Being part of the Dindot lab and conducting genuinely impactful research like this
02:08.1
02:10.4
really inspired me to pursue a PhD
02:10.5
02:13.1
Knowing that I was playing my own small part,
02:13.2
02:16.0
not only in the furthering of scientific understanding,
02:16.1
02:18.8
but also in helping those with Angelman syndrome
02:18.9
02:22.5
motivated me beyond anything else to keep working hard in the lab
02:22.6
02:26.6
and has continued to be my motivation for applying to the graduate program
02:26.7
02:30.8
With almost a year of training and a keen familiarity
02:30.9
02:34.5
with the high standards expected of both staff and students there
02:34.6
02:38.9
I am certain that Texas A&M is the right place for me
02:39.4
02:45.0
My goal is to continue developing the foundational knowledge and skills that I gained there
02:45.1
02:47.7
and progress on to a career in biomedical research
02:47.8
02:52.6
I know that almost every candidate will have similar career aspirations
02:52.7
02:55.4
and humanitarian motivations as my own
02:55.5
03:00.1
But I believe that my previous experience of working full time in research at A&M
03:00.2
03:07.0
my strong work ethic and the determination to succeed that I have demonstrated throughout my bachelors
03:07.1
03:11.0
my internship and my volunteer work with St John’s Ambulance
03:11.1
03:15.9
really sets me apart and makes me an excellent candidate for the programme
03:16.5
03:19.9
Thank you for your time and consideration.
