Hello Klein ISD.
00:06.5
00:10.6
You know, preparing an entire school-year calendar takes a lot of time and effort.
00:10.6
00:16.7
Our calendar is about more than vacation days...it serves as the time framework for student learning.
00:16.7
00:21.4
Just recently, our Board approved the 2017-18 school year calendar.
00:21.4
00:25.9
Joining me today are several Klein ISD principals who served on the calendar committee.
00:25.9
00:31.7
Together, we will tell you how this year's calendar was created and what option was ultimately approved by our Board.
00:31.7
00:34.5
First up, Wunderlich Intermediate principal, Chris Ruggerio.
00:34.5
00:35.5
00:35.5
00:36.1
Thanks, Bret.
00:36.1
00:43.1
This year for the first time we added a calendar survey feature to gather input from employees, parents, students, and community members.
00:43.1
00:47.0
The response to the survey, released in November, was incredible!
00:47.0
00:52.5
We thank the more than 2,000 parents, students and employees that responded to the survey.
00:52.5
00:57.2
People gave us many considerations to think about before creating the calendar options.
00:57.2
01:00.6
Now here’s Cassandra Christian, principal of Bernshausen Elementary.
01:00.6
01:01.3
01:01.3
01:02.5
Thanks, Chris!
01:02.5
01:09.9
The calendar committee met in January and February to review and develop priorities based on the survey results.
01:09.9
01:16.4
Three priorities guided the design process of the 2017 - 18 calendar options.
01:16.4
01:21.8
The first was for a more balanced number of instructional days in both semesters.
01:21.8
01:30.1
The second was an increase in professional development opportunities before the start of the school year and throughout the school year.
01:30.1
01:43.1
Our third was to increase the number of instructional minutes per day by 10 minutes to provide a built-in inclement weather day and a full week off for students and staff for Thanksgiving.
01:43.1
01:46.3
Next up, Brian Greeney, Klein Oak principal.
01:46.3
01:47.4
01:47.4
01:48.5
Thanks, Cassandra.
01:48.5
01:58.0
So to create calendar options aligned with the feedback and priorities, the District of Innovation exemption for early school start and end dates was implemented.
01:58.0
02:04.7
This means our district now has the option to begin the school year earlier than the state-mandated last week of August.
02:04.7
02:11.6
That’s awesome because it allows our teachers the needed professional development time to plan for quality teaching and learning.
02:11.6
02:20.0
Both options included a more balanced numbers of days in the semesters, and our secondary teachers and students appreciate this consideration.
02:20.0
02:24.8
Two calendar options were drafted and made available to our community in February for more feedback.
02:24.8
02:34.5
A summary of the feedback shows an almost even split between the two calendar options, with fewer than 100 votes separating the two.
02:34.5
02:35.5
02:35.5
02:39.5
There were two final factors used to select the 2017-18 school year calendar.
02:39.5
02:46.4
First, we wanted to provide a great transition into the established priorities without changing the calendar too drastically from prior years.
02:46.4
02:49.2
Calendar B is more similar to this year’s calendar.
02:49.2
02:55.8
Additionally, in Calendar A, graduation would occur a full week after the last day of school, which was not a factor in Calendar B.
02:55.8
03:03.0
Both calendars resulted in more balanced semesters, more professional development opportunities and the additional 10 minutes a day of instruction.
03:03.0
03:08.0
Based on those factors, the Board of Trustees approved our recommendation and approved Calendar B.
03:08.0
03:14.9
Getting to this calendar took much work and we are thankful for the input provided from our parents, teachers, students and staff.
03:14.9

03:20.6
03:23.7
Thanks for watching how the Klein ISD calendar was developed.
03:23.7
03:27.3
And a special shout-out to our great principals for helping on this video.
