This is a bird feeder,
00:01.6
00:03.5
and everything you see surrounding me in my yard
00:04.0
00:05.2
is an attempt to protect it
00:05.3
00:06.7
from four theiving squirrels.
00:06.8
00:10.1
If they want the bird seed and the lifetime supply of walnuts in this bank vault,
00:10.5
00:13.1
they'll first need to pass through my nine-part obstacle course.
00:13.2
00:15.5
By design it's extrememly challenging;
00:15.6
00:17.3
It's meant to test their mental limits
00:17.4
00:18.8
and their physical limits.
00:18.9
00:20.4
I help back no punches,
00:20.5
00:22.0
but I have to admit in hindsight,
00:22.1
00:25.8
I once again completely underestimated my adversary.
00:25.9
00:30.0
And truthfully, I'd never thought I'd be that crazy guy in the neighborhood obsessing over the squirrels.
00:30.1
00:31.6
But they started it first
00:31.7
00:33.6
when they would constantly pillage the bird seed
00:33.7
00:36.3
from any bird feeder I put up about a year ago.
00:49.2
00:54.0
That lead to me defending it with an obstacle course
00:54.1
00:58.9
which they handedly defeated.
00:59.0
03:38.1
And so after a year of ruminating on how to avenge that L
03:38.2
03:43.0
with a majorly improved version,
03:43.1
09:29.5
and then 2 months of planning,
09:29.6
09:34.4
my buddy John and I got together
09:34.5
09:39.3
for a 20 second build montage.
09:39.4
09:44.2
[MONTAGE NOISES, i.e, sawblade, paint-can ASMR, etc.]
09:44.3
09:49.1
Here are the basic elements:
09:49.2
09:54.0
For starters, here's their favored bird feeder at the end of the course.
09:54.1
09:58.9
It is sitting atop Fort Knuts, the most secure walnut vault in the western United States.
09:59.0
10:03.8
Now since birds can fly, they can come and go as they please
10:03.9
10:08.7
and eat all the food they want.
10:08.8
10:13.6
But the only way for the squirrels to make it right here
10:13.7
10:18.5
is by surviving
10:18.6
10:23.4
my nine-part grueling obstacle course.
10:23.5
11:16.8
Which all starts right here, climbing up the pole, to this platform, is the single gateway to enter the course.
11:16.9
11:21.7
Every other pole you see has some kind of counter-measure
11:21.8
11:26.6
to keep the squirrel from just climbing up and then entering the course halfway through.
11:26.7
12:16.9
And so the first challenge is this casino,
12:17.0
12:21.8
which may seem like an odd choice,
12:21.9
12:26.7
until you realise that as we were building the course, we also built them little squirrel houses.
12:26.8
12:31.6
So we put them up in a couple different trees
12:31.7
12:36.5
and after a few days, it looked like they actually made some renovations.
12:36.6
12:41.4
So I went to take a closer look.
