Description:
The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five extant species in the genus Panthera, a member of the Felidae. It occurs in a wide range in sub-Saharan Africa, in small parts of Western and Central Asia, on the Indian subcontinent to Southeast and East Asia.In Hong Kong, Singapore, Kuwait, Syria, Libya, Tunisia and most likely in Morocco, leopard populations have already been extirpated. Contemporary records suggest that the leopard occurs in only 25% of its historical global range. The leopard's hunting technique is to either ambush its prey or to stalk it. In either instance, it tries to get as close as possible to its target. It then makes a brief and explosive charge up to speed of 60km per hour, pouncing on its prey and dispatching it with a bite to the neck.Leopards are fast felines and can run at up to 60kmper hours! They're super springy, too, and can leap 6m forward through the air – that's the length of three adults lying head to toe!Leopards are very solitary and spend most of their time alone. But unlike lions, they don't have the power or strength in numbers to spend long, hot days lolling in the open. In fact, lions are one of the main reasons the Mara's leopards can be so tricky to find. Lions have been known to hunt and kill leopards.Leopards very often will kill and eat snakes that they come across. ... Non-venomous snakes are not a problem at all for a leopard, and even huge snakes like pythons will be taken, and leopards will gladly make a meal of them. Leopards do kill humans when they are provoked. They are also nocturnal and spend their nights hunting instead of sleeping. They will often drag their prey into trees to keep it from being taken by other animals. While the carnivore's preferred food sources are ungulates like antelope, gazelles, and impalas, they feed on many animals that might surprise us. Baboons, hares, rodents, birds, lizards, porcupines, warthogs, fish, and dung beetles are all part of the leopard's extensive menu. They can run up to 36 mph (58 kph), jump forward 20 feet (6 meters) and leap 10 feet (3 m) straight up.
