Description:
DIRECTOR'S NOTE: One year after it was premiered in San Jose, Antique, on May 1, 2019, Pátok (The Mountain Carvers) is finally being released online. The decision to release (freely and for eternity) comes after realizing that this pandemic is not going to go anytime soon. We planned to bring the film to students especially of Western Visayas but that will not happen anymore. Should the tour have pushed through, we would have shared (as we have pledged) a percentage of the income to Brgy. Gen. Fullon, as well as to fund our other projects, in other areas of Antique and Panay, but that that does not seem plausible anymore. I was afraid that, like many projects presented to indigenous communities, Pátok would just be another lip-service. Looking back, there was only one reason why I started doing this project five years ago: I thought the story of the Iraynon Bukidnon community in Gen. Fullon was incredible. It was astounding that there was no prior record of their of rice terraces, their knowledge, their culture, in books and researches, despite the fact that researchers and anthropologists have scoured the mountains and hinterlands of Panay. Very few are familiar with the Iraynon Bukidnon as a people. The few researches found in the manuscripts of NCIP, only a handful of obscure researchers have read. But one day I came across a few lines from renowned Filipino writer Ferdinand Jarin who said, "Hangga't di naman 'yan binabasa, kinilala at inangkin ng mas maraming mambabasa, bukod sa kayo-kayo lang, wala pa ring buhay ang akdang 'yan." (Until it is not read, acknowledged, and accepted by a larger reader, aside from your own circle, your work will not have lived.) And that struck me. Maybe the task of trying to help Gen. Fullon and the other Iraynon Bukidnon communities is too big a task for me alone. If only more people knew about them then maybe they'd receive more attention. And so I release Pátok (The Mountain Carvers) for its audience out there. I am hoping that, with the attention it will generate, there will be people, no matter how few, who will join us in helping our indigenous communities.
