Description:
The coronavirus pandemic has hit Brazil harder than most countries. Over 441,000 people there have now died from COVID-19 - the second worst death toll in the world. The country is also struggling to implement an effective vaccination campaign to finally get a grip on the pandemic. One solution that could provide relief in the coming months is the development of homegrown vaccines, like the one from the Butantan Institute. DW reporter Anne-Sophie Brändlin went to Brazil's largest city, Sao Paulo, to meet the researchers working on one of them, ButanVac, and look at the science behind it. Human trials haven't started yet, but results so far are promising. That's not only good news for the people of the country - it could help João Doria, São Paulo Governor and the man expected to challenge Jair Bolsonaro for the presidency in next year's election.
