Title:
Description:
A grizzly bear gets curious about a group of hikers on the Garden Wall Trail near Logan Pass. My husband and our 3 kids were driving along the Going to the Sun road and caught this encounter on our cell phone. You can hear our commentary (and radio) in the video. For reference, the Glacier National Park regulations pamphlet states "when viewing wildlife you should stay at least 100 feet away from large animals and a minimum of 300 feet from bears. Instead of moving closer, use binoculars or a telephoto lens to improve your view. Keep the animal's line of travel or escape route clear. If wildlife approaches you, move away." The hikers in this video were fortunate that the bear did not pursue them. Within a few seconds of stopping this video we heard a gunshot come from the trail. We could not see what had unfolded. (Unseen in the video) is a Ranger truck passing us with his lights on once he was aware of the situation. He quickly ran up the trail to the location of the hikers. We assume the gunshot we heard was that of the Ranger firing a shell cracker shot to scare the grizzly bear away from the road and trail. Video taken August 12, 2013
