Description:
This is an explosion that should have never happened—one of the largest non-nuclear explosions ever recorded in history. According to experts from the university of Sheffield, it is equivalent to one thousand to one thousand, five hundred tons of TNT. It occurred on 4th august two thousand and twenty. Killed approximately one hundred and fifty and injured more than 5 thousand people. About 300 thousand people have lost their homes. It is two thousand and thirteen. MV Rhosus sets off from Batumi, Georgia, carrying 2750 metrics tons of ammonium nitrate, destined for Mozambique. MV Rhosus is owned by Teto shipping. When it reached Beirut, it was detained by port authority due to gross operation violations, unpaid fees, and complaints from the crews. The ship did not resume the journey. The owner abandoned the ship and cut off all communications. Russian crews were repatriated to their home country after 11 months. Director of Lebanese Customs, Badri Daher, for 6 years, repeatedly warned about dangers the cargo posed. Daher even turned to courts to dispose of the cargo without success. At some point, he even suggested the cargo be sold to the army, but Lebanese authorities showed no concern. In total, 6 letters were sent to legal authorities, but no answers were provided. Custom and state security sent additional letters to the authorities to re-export or dispose of the cargo, but there was no response. In short, about one hundred and fifty people died, 5 thousand injured, and 300 thousand lost their homes. This was due to negligence from people they entrusted with authority.
