In 1989, Disney first aired the famous show entitled "The Little Mermaid".

Who wouldn't remember Ariel and the other sea creatures that made our childhood colorful?

But, I learned an another story which came from a book which was the real origin of the fairytale entitled "The Little Mermaid".

This book was published in 1837, and in my opinion, it has a really weird and dark story.

According to the Disney version that we had watched, this is about a 16-year old mermaid named Ariel.

Ariel was bored in the Kingdom where her father leads. She also seemed curious about the human world,

about what humans do and how are their lifestyles.

One night, Ariel saved a prince named Eric when he drowned after the explosion of their ship.

At that moment, Ariel fell in love with Eric which drove her to desire having feet.

Then Ariel decided to seek help from the sea-witch named Ursula wherein they had a deal.

This deal gave Ariel feet in exchange of giving Ursula her beautiful voice.

Another condition of the deal is that Ariel must receive a true love's kiss from Eric in a span of three days.

If she fails, she'll turn back into a sea-creature again.

But because of Ariel's desperate love, she still agreed to the conditions.

In that span of three days, Ariel was near in getting her true love's kiss from Eric.

However, Ursula came as she suddenly decided to steal the prince from Ariel

by changing her physical appearance into a pretty fine lady.

When the prince and Ursula were supposed to get married,

luckily, Ariel managed to stop it and she confessed the truth to the prince.

Ursula burst in anger but Eric had stopped it,

and through the help of Zeus, the God of Thunder, Ursula was exterminated.

After the incident, Prince Eric and Ariel got married and they lived happily ever after.

But according the original book entitled "The Little Mermaid" written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1937,

you can notice the difference of the versions and several scenes in this book was really disturbing.

And here's how the story started...

One day, in a Kingdom of Ocean, there was a mermaid princess

And this mermaid got tired of the life in the ocean lead by his father.

Similar to the Ariel of Disney, this mermaid is also amazed and curious by human life at land.

Because of the stories she heard from her sisters and grandmother, her interest to meet a human grew.

But in this Kingdom, mermaids under 14 years old weren't allowed to leave and go outside their Kingdom's premises.

The little mermaid in this story were only 10 years old, so we can assume that she waited for almost 5 years until she can leave.

The moment this little mermaid turned 15, she decided to go out of their kingdom.

And here's when she saved a prince from drowning.

While the prince laid unconscious, that's when the little mermaid fell for him.

She left the prince's body in a holy temple and she went home back to their kingdom.

As she arrived at the kingdom, she asked her grandmother that if she didn't saved the guy, will he die like how mermaids die.

I'll explain why she came up with the question.

The mermaids in this story has a lifespan of 300 years, however when they die, there'll be no afterlife.

Once the mermaids die, they'll turn into sea foams and that's where everything ends for them.

Unlike humans, once we die, there's an afterlife that awaits us.

Because of this, we can say that the little mermaid wasn't only interested in the prince,

but she was also interested in what we call the "afterlife".

However, in this book, it states that it was impossible for a human to fall in love with mermaids

as humans sees their tails as something unpleasant to the eye.

And here's where the story gets weird and dark...

The little mermaid decided to see a sea-witch and she wished to have feet.

But the sea-witch asked for the mermaid's beautiful voice in return.

In order to get the little mermaid's voice, the sea-witch has to cut her tongue off and made it into a necklace.

The little mermaid agreed to the deal and she received a magic potion that'll give her her dreamed feet.

But before she drank the potion, the sea-witch added some conditions to the deal.

First, whenever her fishtail transforms to human legs, she'll feel as if she was stabbed by swords.

Second, whenever she steps a foot, she'll feel as if she's stepping on knives.

Third, if the prince suddenly decided to marry another woman, the lttle mermaid will die the day after.

And once she dies, she'll turn into sea foams.

We can tell that the conditions were unfair and unjust.

But the little mermaid is very determined that she still agreed to the deal.

As she drank the magic potion, she actually had legs and feet and she went straight to the sea shore.

She was immediately noticed by the prince at that moment and was enticed with the beauty of the human transformation of the little mermaid.

Because of this, the prince brought her to their castle and asked her a few questions,

But because the little mermaid lost her tongue, she wasn't able to speak and answer.

Even though the little mermaid couldn't answer, he still brought her to the castle to dress her.

As the days passed by, the prince slowly lost interest as she wasn't able to speak,

and after a few days, he only treated the little mermaid like a sister.

The day which the little mermaid feared the most, the prince fell for another woman.

If you can remember, the little mermaid left the prince's body at a holy temple on the day she saved him.

What we didn't know was when the prince woke up in that temple, he met a woman whom he mistook as his savior that took care of him until he recovered.

That's why when they met again, the prince finally fell in love.

The little mermaid was bad as she thought that she'll be loved by the prince with all the efforts that she did.

Another thing that worries her is the moment the prince marries, she'll die the next day.

What's more painful in this story, the little mermaid was invited in the wedding ceremony.

Watching the love of your life get married to someone not you...

Just imagine the pain she must've felt that moment including the knowledge that she'll die the next day

as the little mermaid wasn't able to fulfill her conditions with the sea-witch.

Later that night, while everyone in the ship where the wedding ceremony occurred were asleep,

the little mermaid went to the end railings and looked at the sea, thinking of her death the next day.

Unexpectedly, her mermaid sisters appeared in the sea with a solution to the little mermaid's problem.

In exchange of the sisters' hair, they received a magic knife from the sea-witch.

They said that the little mermaid only has to stab the prince's heart with the magic knife

and the blood from it must drop on the feet of the little mermaid.

The moment it drops on her feet, the deal with the sea-witch will be exterminated and she'll return into a mermaid once again.

The moment came when she only has to stab him already, but the little mermaid failed as she thought of how much she loved the prince.

She cried and threw the knive in the sea. We can tell that she's already prepared to accept her fate.

She jump to the water and there she waited for her death.

But unexpectedly, she didn't turn into a sea foam. Instead, she turned into a wind.

When she opened her eyes, she was surrounded by angels and she achieved her dreamed afterlife.

It is because she chose to give up on her life for the love of her life.

These angels gave another chance to live an another life with a span of 300 years.

If she'll live her years doing nothing but kindness, she'll come to her dreamed heaven.

So, here's where this story ends.
