What is FSSAI?

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is a food license it’s given into any foodservice providers like manufacturers, labelers, repackers, suppliers, distributors, and any kind of business into the food industry.

Types of FSSAI license:

So there are three types of food licenses.

1. Basic registration, 
2. State license, and 
3. Central license.

Basic registration:  For basic registrations, you should be eligible enough to run to take up this license if you’re a start-up in your business. And if you say that your per day production capacity will be less than 1 metric ton and your annual turnover would be less than Rs. 12 lakhs. If you’re anywhere in between these eligibility criteria then you would be eligible to take up a basic registration.

State license: State license is given to any food service provider if you say your production capacity is more than 2 metric tons and your annual turnover is more than Rs. 12 lakhs and not exceeding Rs. 20 crores. So if you are eligible for this and if you say you run your business within one particular state then you are eligible to take up a state license.

Central license: It is eligible for a person if you are into the business of any food products, dealing with any import or export or if you are doing any online platform like running your order or selling your product into an Amazon or Flipkart. If you have your online portal and if you run your business through an e-commerce portal then you are eligible for the central license.

Let's take an example: If you say you have your head office in Delhi and if you have a branch office in Tamil Nadu then you need to take up a central license in Delhi and one state license in your branch office in Tamil Nadu. If you follow all these basic criteria and follow the complaints and rules and regulations of your FSSAI then you are very much eligible to get your license. Once you file your application you will get your acknowledgement with a reference number through which you can run your business and after which within a certain time you'll be getting your final certificate from the FSSAI department.

For how many years can a food license be applied?

Any food license can be applied for a maximum of five years whether you can choose how many years you need to apply for. Whether for one year, two, three, or four or five years. So based on your number of years that you applied your government fee would vary based on your basic registration, state, or the central license.

Central License Eligibility Criteria
Production capacity exceeds two metric tonnes per annum
Annual turnover exceeds 20 crores per annum
If you are an exporter, importer or e-commerce business, like Amazon/Flipkart

Once you file an application for an FSSAI license, you will receive an acknowledgement slip with a reference number, which you can use to track your claim and start running your business. All food licenses have a maximum validity of FIVE years. The government fees for your application will depend on its duration and type.
