Description:
AUTO21 HQPs: Dr. Arturo Rodriguez-U, Dr. Kunyu Zhang, Dr. Singaravelu Vivekanandhan and Ms. Vidhya Nagarajan Sincere thanks to all our industry partners and research funding. Special thanks to AUTO21 for providing a platform to showcase our innovations. Project Leader: Prof. Amar K. Mohanty and Dr. Manju Misra, Bioproducts Discovery and Development Centre (BDDC), University of Guelph. Project Description: Main aim of this project is to substitute the existing petroleum-based materials with bio-based hybrid composites in certain automotive interior parts. Successful attempts of this project has demonstrated the possibility of using bio-carbon obtained from biomass as a substitute to the petro-based carbon black that is traditionally used in about 70% of plastic interior parts to provide the black color. Several different prototypes for various interior car parts have been developed by engineering hybrid biocomposites (plastics+ natural fiber+ additives) with different biobased content. Benefits and Outcomes: Development of such bio-based automotive interior parts can reduce the dependence on petro-based plastics and additives. Locally grown Ontario biomass will find high volume value-added applications and generate a new revenue stream for farmers; more job openings are also expected. By adopting bio-based sustainable materials for interior auto parts, Canadian Automotive sector can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and leave a low carbon footprint.
