Description:
The war between Armenia and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh has raised important questions regarding de facto statehood and secession. If Azerbaijan is now attempting to retake Nagorno-Karabakh by armed force, then how does this stand legally and politically? And what are the wider implications that need to be considered? For example, there are important human rights aspects to the conflict. Hello and welcome! My name is James Ker-Lindsay. On this channel, I take an informed look at International Relations with a particular focus on territorial conflicts, secession, independence movements and new countries. In 1992, Nagorno-Karabakh, a region in Azerbaijan inhabited mainly by ethnic Armenians, declared independence as the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic or, as its now known, the Republic of Artsakh. An attempt by Azerbaijan to retake the territory led to a major war with neighbouring Armenia. The conflict came to an end in 1994 with a ceasefire brokered by Russia. In the decades since then, efforts have been made to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute. However, these have failed to produce a breakthrough. In recent years, there have been concerns that the situation was ripe for a return to fighting, with Azerbaijan looking to retake the territory by force. It's against this backdrop that the resumption of fighting in September 2020 has raised such serious concerns. Is Azerbaijan now trying to retake the territory by force? And, if so, what are the legal and political dimensions of such a decision?
