Note: Decibels are rated in a few different ways: dB(SPL), dB(A), dB(B) and dB(C). Car audio is rated in dB(SPL) which does not take into account natural human hearing characteristics and how it is more sensitive at some frequencies and less sensitive at others. The dB(A) scale is less sensitive to very high and very low frequencies and is based on the Fletcher--Munson curves which are one of many sets of equal-loudness contours for the human ear. 150dB SPL at a higher frequency can be more damaging than a 150dB SPL at a lower frequency. However, this does not mean low frequency but high pressure levels are not damaging.
